Father Ryan High School is pleased to announce Zach Mettenberger as the new Football Head Coach, effective immediately.
Coach Mettenberger will become the 14th Football Head Coach in Father Ryan’s 100-year history. He has served as Father Ryan’s Football Offensive Coordinator, Quarterback Coach, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach since 2024, after previously serving as an Offensive Analyst and Tight Ends Assistant for the University of Alabama under the direction of Head Coach Nick Saban.
Father Ryan’s Director of Athletics, Ann Mullins ’03, announced, “I am confident that Coach Mettenberger will build upon the strong foundation established by the coaches before him, leading our student-athletes to new heights both on and off the field. His passion for the game, commitment to developing young athletes, and leadership qualities make him the right person to guide our Football program into the future. With his experience and vision, I have no doubt that he will inspire our players, uphold the proud traditions of Father Ryan, and continue fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork.”
The Football Head Coach Search Committee, led by Director of Athletics Ann Mullins ’03, included Enoch Bunch ’00, Tony Carletello ’89, Billy Haley ’01, Rick Reilly ’92, and various Father Ryan administrators and staff. The national search produced impressive candidates from across the country, with over 95 applicants. The Search Committee narrowed these applications down to 15 candidates for virtual interviews, later selecting four finalists for in-person, on-campus interviews.
Coach Mettenberger expressed his gratitude for his selection by saying, “I am honored by the opportunity to serve as a leader of Father Ryan’s historic Football program and foster the legacy of excellence created by those who came before me in this role. I look forward to working with the coaches to help our student-athletes become the best version of themselves and to continue developing a program that makes the entire Father Ryan community proud to cheer on the Irish.”
“The position of Football Head Coach plays a significant role in impacting the culture of the Father Ryan community,” said President Paul Davis ’81. “Coach Mettenberger has distinguished himself as a dedicated and humble leader who will inspire our students to grow as athletes and people. We look forward to seeing him uphold the mission of Father Ryan through the Football program as he helps our players reach their full spiritual, academic, and personal potential.”

Espinosa, Jr. reflected, “Coach Mettenberger brings a wealth of experience to Father Ryan’s Football program from his time as a standout collegiate player at LSU to his career in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans, and his transition into coaching. His familiarity with our school and Football program, having served in multiple roles, gives him a deep understanding of our mission and values. Coach Mettenberger is a dedicated student of the game and has served as a formidable role model for our student-athletes. His passion, leadership, and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly strengthen our program, and I am excited to see its continued growth and success under his leadership.”
