Family of Sidney Bunch, Jr Visit Father Ryan

To celebrate Black History Month, earlier this week, the Multi-Cultural Student Union welcomed Sidney Bunch IV ‘96 (grandson), Karen (Williams) Bunch ‘71 (daughter-in-law; wife of Sidney Bunch III), Enoch Bunch ‘00 (grandson), and Brenda (Bunch) Byas (daughter), who spoke about Sidney Bunch, Jr.

Graduating from high school in 1949, Sidney, Jr. was immediately signed to the Negro League’s Baltimore Elite Giants, where he first started as a batboy but later took the field as the starting first baseman. He went on to play for the Nashville Stars, Billings (Montana) Mustangs of the Pioneer League, the Birmingham Black Barons, and the Kansas City Monarchs. During his time playing, he put his career on hold when, in 1954, his Marine unit was sent overseas.

Thank you to the Bunch family for sharing the story of Sidney Bunch, Jr.’s talent and the importance of the Nashville Stars and the Negro Leagues.
