The Irish golf teams compete in one of the most competitive divisions in the state of Tennessee, the middle region of Division II, which includes Ensworth, MBA, Brentwood Academy, Lipscomb, Harpeth Hall, JPII, and St. Cecelia. In the 2019 Region Tournament at Harpeth Hills, the boys varsity finished 3rd and the girls varsity won the championship and advanced to the State Tournament. Sophomore Jacob Garland finished second in the Region and competed in the State Tournament as an individual.
Our home course is Old Natchez Country Club. All home matches and practices will take place there. Each player will receive two shirts and two hats. Extra gear will be available for purchase online. There will be an initial fee at the beginning of the school year to participate. Any incoming freshmen that makes the varsity will receive a Father Ryan Callaway bag.
The regular season takes place during August and September. It will be comprised of 9-hole matches, 18-hole tournaments, practices, qualifying rounds, the Region tournament, and the State tournament. We will go on a retreat at the end of the summer the week of July 27th-31st to kick off the season.
The expectation for making the boys’ team for 2020 is that each player demonstrates the ability to consistently shoot in the 70’s during 18-hole competitions. Girls need to consistently shoot below 85. Players will be expected to participate in a minimum of eight tournaments outside of the regular season in order to qualify for the varsity. The teams will be determined by comparing each player’s five lowest scores to par between March 1st and July 15th. Every score must be verifiable online and club championships will count. The final varsity teams will be announced on July 22nd. Rankings during the regular season will be determined by weekly qualifying rounds.
For those wanting to play for the junior varsity team, there will be a two-day tryout in late July and the dates will be announced later. There is no minimum tournament requirement, although it is highly encouraged that they get tournament experience during the off season. The team will play in 10 matches during August and September at local public courses. The expectation to make the team is to demonstrate the ability to break 95 on a regulation 18-hole course. This team is for those who do not make the varsity and/or those who want to improve their game with the intent of trying out for the varsity the following season.
Those interested in trying out for any of the teams need to let Coach Thompson know by March 1, 2020. Please email if you have any questions: email@example.com
