Confidentiality

It is our belief that upholding confidentiality in the counseling relationship provides an opportunity for personal growth for the student that otherwise would not be experienced.  All individual and group counseling sessions will remain confidential except where noted below.

Exceptions to confidentiality include but are not limited to the following:

  • Situations that present serious possibility of suicide;

  • Situations that present the possibility of or reasons to suspect physical/emotional/sexual abuse and/or neglect;

  • Situations that present reported self-harm or high-risk behaviors/choices;

  • If further consultation is needed from other helping professionals (see link);

  • If student journal entries in class work reveal a need for intervention;

  • If the matter to be discussed involves a violation of school rules or regulations of Father Ryan High School or the Diocese of Nashville.

 At the onset of counseling, confidentiality is reviewed with each student and revisited throughout the counseling relationship.

Please see the Confidentiality Agreement to see a copy that is reviewed with each student prior to entering any counseling relationship.
