The Grotto

Monsignor George W. Rohling

In March of this year a small group of "Friends of Monsignor Rohling" determined to erect a suitable monument to this saintly man for his 58 years of deep devotion to the blessed Virgin Mary and his long and valuable priestly service to our Diocese and Father Ryan High School as alumnus, as teacher and as generous benefactor. A beautiful grotto was the obvious choice.

The grotto consists of two meditation areas; one centered on the grotto with the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the other centered on a stunning stone Cross taken from the old Father Ryan High School building formerly located on Elliston Place. Bricks from the old building were used as expansion joints on the walkway from the main drive to the grotto and in the construction of the lovely footbridge which traverses a stream alongside the grotto area. The grand alter and benches are constructed from large stones once used on the face of the old Elliston Place building.

Monsignor Rohling is one of God's greatest blessings to all of us! May God bless him and continue to hold him in the Palm of His Hand!!
