Ash Wednesday

February 13, 2002

Ash Wednesday On February 13, 2002, the Father Ryan Student Body and Faculty gathered in the Field House for an Ash Wednesday prayer service to mark the beginning of Lent. This is a season of prayer and penance that leads us to practice a more Christian life; it sets before us the example of Christ. The meaning of Lent for Catholics is a time of spiritual development; we share this with the entire Church as we prepare to celebrate the Easter mystery.

Catholics, who are 18 years of age and older, fast on Ash Wednesday by eating only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but snacking between meals is not permitted. On Fridays during Lent, Catholics abstain from eating meat and refrain from eating in between meals.

From giving up a favorite something to performing a good deed, there are numerous things that you can do during Lent. The Campus Ministry program offers many projects that you can volunteer to participate in. Sign-ups will take place immediately after the prayer service. Some of this year's projects are:

  • Crop Walk - students and adults walk in a fundraiser that will take place across US to raise money for poor and hungry of the world
  • Project Reflect - after school program for young children in public housing
  • Collection of Non-Food Items - for Refugee Resettlement and out-reach programs
  • Pulse Day - city wide youth volunteer service day
