Contributions to the Civil War

Father Ryan served as a chaplain in the Civil War, although he was never attached to a staff or a regiment. This is because he was never an official chaplain. Father Ryan's brother was a confederate soldier and was killed in a battle in Kentucky. Father Ryan is commemorated in New Orleans and has a life-size statue in Mobile, Alabama. Father Ryan adopted the Confederate Army.
